The Abbey House Hotel - Voted Best Wedding Venue in Cumbria

The Abbey House Hotel is located on the outskirts of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria in the Southern Lake District. Set in fourteen acres of private woodland and gardens making it a perfect setting for weddings, holidays or short weekend breaks. This Lake District hotel takes its name from the neighbouring ruins of Furness Abbey. Built back in the 11th Century the abbey was one of the greatest Cistercian foundations in the country. There is plenty to see and do in the surrounding area such as exploring the stunning Lake District. Abbey House Hotel is famous for its warm hospitality and being a real home from home providing ideal accommodation to relax and unwind after your days activities.

We have a total of 61 bedrooms, including 2 specialised accessible rooms located on the ground floor, with wheel in wet rooms. We have a further 30 bedrooms accessible by lift with no stairs, however the shower/bath is step into.

  • The nearest Railway Station is Barrow in Furness, 3 minutes taxi journey or a 20 minute walk.
  • There are two bus stops nearby the hotel, one on Abbey Road & one by the hospital 5 minutes walk away.

Car Parking and Arrival

  • Abbey Road is the main road outside the hotel which turns into the hotels driveway,
  • Please drive around the fountain and park to the right of the hotel in the main car park, signposted. CCTV in operation
  • There are 4 disabled parking spaces directly outside the hotel entrance, clearly marked.
  • The main driveway is tarmac with no steps up or into the main entrance.
  • There are sleeping policeman as you go into the main car park, along with a gravel pathway upon your return from the car.
  • The car park & driveway are well lit at night with the pathways clearly visible.
  • If you need assistance with the main hotel doorway, please ring doorbell located on left of door frame.


Main Entrance / Reception / Welcome Area

  • Reception is to the left of the main entrance as you enter from the vestibule
  • The ground floor is level throughout with easy access to the main residents bar, restaurant & 2 function suites.
  • There is a lowered section of the check-in desk.
  • All guests are shown to their rooms with the nearest fire exits pointed out.



  • There are two ground floor accessible rooms that are equipped with wide entrance, easy open door.
  • Each room has a wheel in wet room with safety bars.
  • Furniture can be added or taken away to suit the guests needs
  • Both rooms are Super-King size beds or Twin upon prior request
  • Both rooms are equipped with 55" wide screen television with subtitles and audio description facilities.


Bathrooms, Shower-rooms and Toilets (Ensuite or Shared)

  • Ground floor bedrooms are equipped with a wheel in wet room as standard
  • Vertical & horizontal grab rails are in place
  • Low toilet & basin height
  • Shower seats available upon request
  • Non Slip tiled flooring


Public Areas - Halls, Stairs, Landings, Corridors

  • All public areas, halls, stairs, landings and lifts, are well lit using a combination of ceiling and wall lights (fluorescent lighting is used in the lift). Corridors are slightly dimmer lit by wall lights, some areas use energy saving automatic lighting
  • There are two lifts with buttons and areas clearly marked with audio announcements.
  • All public areas are with short pile carpets, tiles or wooden floors.


Public Areas - Lounges, Lobbies

  • The lounge area is situated on the ground floor with level entry from the reception and main entrance area.
  • The room has a mixture of seating with sofas and soft chairs with and without arms as well as some stools, together with low coffee tables.
  • All areas are fully accessible.
  • Lighting is natural daylight and by night levels are controlled by dimmer switches, with overhead and wall lighting used as well as table lamps & tea lights around the room.
  • The nearest toilets are to the rear of reception & include a unisex accessible toilet & baby changing facility.


Restaurant/Dining Room, Bar & Bar area

  • The restaurant and bar are situated on the ground floor with level entry from the reception and main entrance area.
  • All doors to this area are normally open and accessible
  • Both the restaurant and bar have level access throughout. Tables in the restaurant are well spaced apart.
  • Service can be from the bar directly or a table service is offered throughout.
  • Food is served from midday until 10pm, it is the same menu throughout.
  • The full menu is available as room service between midday & 10pm


Public Toilets

  • Public toilets can be found on the ground floor to the rear of the reception area
  • Public toilets can be found on the lower ground floor to the right of the Duddon Function Suite.
  • Both toilet areas have a unisex accessible toilet
  • Unisex baby changing is available to the rear of reception.
  • accessible toilets have non slip flooring and lever handle taps
  • accessible toilets have emergency pull cords


Grounds and Gardens

  • We have 14 acres of manicured grounds - mainly grassed areas
  • There is a compacted gravel path suitable for wheel chairs - some steep inclines and undulating areas! - that surrounds the perimeter of the grounds
  • pathways to the Furness Abbey are clearly marked
  • both the front and rear gardens have a decking area for guest use - 2 steps up.


Conference and Meeting Rooms

  • We have 7 various conference rooms of various sizes, all accessible on a level floor from the main entrance, 3 accessible via a lift.
  • All rooms have various styles of tables and seating.
  • All rooms are near accessible toilet facilities.

Additional Information

  • All of our staff receive regular training that includes disability awareness training.
  • We have a set of evacuation procedures – should you require assistance, pull the alarm cord & stay in your room,someone will come to your room and help you with evacuation either out of the building or to a refuge.
  • We welcome trained assistance dogs. A water bowl & doggy dinners! are available on request.
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout - please contact us before arrival if you require a VPN.
  • Furness General Hospital is only one minute drive away, they operate an emergency Baycall service.


Future Plans

  • We are undergoing full sympathetic refurbishment throughout 2013/14 & 2015.
  • All accessibility issues will be considered during this process
