A visit to Cumbria is incomplete without trying a traditional English afternoon tea. The idea of afternoon or high is tea is credited to  Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford in the early 19th century. The practice at the time was to eat just 2 meals a day which left a rather large gap between meals  in the afternoon. The Duchess came up with the idea of complimenting the popular drink of the day, tea with a light snack. This idea soon caught on and thus the traditional afternoon tea was born.
