South Lakes Wild Animal Park
The park is situated about 2.5 miles from the Abbey House Hotel. It has been described as one of the best attractions in the Lake District. Conishead Priory is a well known visitor attraction in South Cumbria and each year welcomes thousands of visitors who appreciate the historic building and peaceful atmosphere. Described by English Heritage as '"...a very important Gothic revival country house with few peers in the north west" the distinctive two towers of the front elevation are an important local landmark. Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway
Just along the A590 lies the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway in the picturesque Leven Valley at the southern end of Windermere. The railway is celebrating its 140th year and is a must see for any enthusiast young or old. The trains depart at Haverthwaite and transport you to the lakeside at Windermere where you can catch the steamer to Ambleside.
Lakeland Motor museum
The Lakeland Motor Museum has just been re-located to Backbarrow near Windermere. The museum houses a fantastic range of cars which have been part of everyone`s childhood through the ages. The collection includes a replica of Bluebird - Donald Campbell's car, and 30000 other pieces of memorabilia providing an insight to our motoring past.
Situated in Barrow in Furness the Dock Museum tells the history of the Barrow shipbuilding industry and what this did for the town. There are plenty of exhibits to see and even slide shows. Entry into the museum is free and is well worth a visit. The museum is built over an historic graving dock; there is a wealth of objects and information on the social and industrial history of the Furness area. There is also a landscaped site and Channelside walk linking to the Cumbria Coastal Way.
Holker Hall is situated about 25 minutes from Abbey House Hotel and is a beautiful country house estate owned by Lord and Lady Cavendish. The award winning gardens are a reflection of the dedication of the gardeners who work tirelessly throughout the year. Coupled with this the house itself is open to the public throughout the summer and on the grounds of the hall is a tea room and gift shop. The Aquarium of the Lakes lies directly on the shores of Lake Windermere. With underwater adventures, and fun for all the family, it`s a great day out. The children can feed the fish and there are talks throughout the day on the fishy residents. School parties are welcome and there is also wheelchair access.
Newly opened Cumbria Karting is just the thing to entertain the kids on a cold afternoon. Situated in James Freel Close just outside the town centre, the Go Karting is indoor and has great facilities.
